Lord, this coming Sunday morning, give joy to your people through your Word. Give the joy of revealing your character, perfect and holy and unchanging through the ages. Give the joy of your gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ providing salvation for sinners. Give the joy of forgiveness, and justification, and adoption, and eternal hope and all that flows to us through our union with Christ. Give the joy of the Holy Spirit, since you have come to dwell within us. Give joy to the grieving–joy that sustains them in their trials. Give joy to the tempted, drawing them away from the false promises of idols. Give joy to the hopeless, that in you there is a hope that cannot be taken away. Give joy to those in conflict, that you are the great peacemaker and that you have given grace to forgive and love even in difficult offenses and argument. Give joy to the sick, that in the gospel we have the promise of the end of the fall one day. Give joy to the unsaved, by granting them eternal life through your name. Give joy to the older saints–that you have walked with them every day of their pilgrimage. Give joy to the younger saints–that even to their old age you will carry them. Give joy to the husbands, that they have been rescued from the prison of selfishness and set free to love sacrificially. Give joy to the wives, that they can entrust their hopes and dreams to a Father who knows every need before we ask. Give joy to the children, because you are the one who loves children and calls them to yourself. Give joy to the singles, knowing that you have set them apart in this season for single-hearted devotion to you. Give joy to your church, called together from every tribe and race and united in our union with you. Give joy, Lord–the joy that only you can give! Give it in abundance. Give it to overflowing. Give a laughter of soul this Sunday.
