I’m reading 2 Chronicles right now and I’ve been saddened and sobered by how many of the kings start well but fail in the end. Of course the best example is Solomon, who begins by seeking God for wisdom and building the temple, and ends worshiping false gods neglecting the Scriptures. So many of his descendants followed his example. Reading this book has moved my heart in two ways.
First, it has made me see my need for self-suspicion and vigilance. I don’t want to fail in the second half of my race like Solomon did. No degree of past faithfulness makes up for future indifference to conviction and complacency about God’s Word.
Second, it has made me grateful for Jesus, my Savior King. He was faithful to the very end. The words “it is finished” have new value after reading 2 Chronicles. He is better than the best of the beginning of the kingships of Solomon, Joash, Uzziah, and Hezekiah, but without their failure in the end. He finished faithful. He is the King to be trusted, who will establish God’s kingdom in righteousness and preserve the worship of God without fail until the kingdom of this world comes to an end.
Praise him. Thank God that one greater than Solomon has come here.
