Imagine life without sugar. No candy bars, soda, or ice cream. No flavored coffee or whipped cream. Now imagine how enjoyable honey would be in that world-devoid-of-refined-sugar. What a treat. What an eating highlight!
When David says that God’s Word is “sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.” (Psalm 19), he means that God’s Word is this kind of experiential highlight, like a rush of organic joy in a culture where honey is the height of sweetness.
I’ve heard that our taste buds become less sensitive as we age. I think the reverse is true for maturing Christians. Our spiritual taste buds are increasingly renewed in Christ. The truly sweet tastes increasingly sweet. The delightful becomes delightful to us.
If God’s Word hasn’t ever seemed like honey to you, keep reading, keep meditating, keep praying for an explosion of experiential enjoyment. Keep praying for the honey moment. May our taste buds be renewed in Christ to love God’s Word.
